Frequently asked questions

Protesting your Texas property taxes, answered.

Is HelpMeProtest really free?

Yes. HelpMeProtest is completely free. There is no account, no email required, and no fee or commission. We do not take a percentage of your savings the way most protest firms do.

What is an "unequal appraisal" protest?

Texas Property Tax Code Section 41.43(b)(3) lets you protest if your property is appraised unequally compared to similar properties. If the median appraised value per square foot of comparable homes in your neighborhood is lower than yours, you may be entitled to a reduction. We build that comparison for you from the appraisal district's own public data.

Will protesting raise my property taxes?

Filing an unequal-appraisal protest does not raise your taxes. The appraisal review board can leave your value unchanged or lower it, and you can withdraw at any time. We only suggest grounds to protest when the public data supports a reduction.

Do you file the protest for me?

No. HelpMeProtest is a self-service tool. We prepare your evidence and a written argument, and you file it yourself through your county's online protest system. We are not your agent or representative and we are not a registered property tax consultant.

When is the protest deadline?

In Texas the deadline to file a protest is generally May 15, or 30 days after your appraisal notice is delivered, whichever is later. Check your notice and file on time. You are responsible for meeting the deadline.

Which counties do you cover?

The full evidence generator is live for Harris, Fort Bend, Galveston, Collin, Tarrant, Dallas, Williamson, and Travis counties. For every other Texas county, our county directory points you to the appraisal district and its online protest filing. See the Counties and data sources page for details.

Do you store my information?

We use only public appraisal-district records to build your evidence. The optional questionnaire answers you enter are used to generate your argument in your browser and are not stored on our servers.

What if I disagree with the comparable properties chosen?

The comparables are a starting point selected by size, age, quality, and neighborhood. You can add your own evidence (condition issues, repair costs, a recent purchase price, or an independent appraisal) in the questionnaire, and it becomes part of your written argument.

Is this legal or tax advice?

No. HelpMeProtest provides public-record data and automated analysis to help you file your own protest. It is not legal or tax advice. For advice about your specific situation, consult a qualified professional.
